Playing Poker: Know Your Card Deck

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Before you can play any game of poker, you have to know your card deck. Knowing what each card means is essential to playing any poker game. Most games of poker use standard values for each card. However, their may be some variants to each game. For example, the Ace may represent a high card in one type of poker and a low card in another type of poker.

There are fifty-two cards in each deck. Each of these cards has a different meaning or value in poker.

Know the Suits

In each deck of cards, there are four suits. The suits are used to make a number of poker hands. Having five cards all of the same suit gives you one of the highest hands possible, a flush.

Spades: The spades are a black suit with a spade marking. The spades have number cards from two to ten and four face cards- jack, queen, king, and ace.

Hearts: The hearts are a red suit with a heart marking. The hearts have number cards from two to ten and four face cards- jack, queen, king, and ace.

Clubs: The clubs are a black suit with a club (or clover shaped) marking. The clubs have number cards from two to ten and four face cards- jack, queen, king, and ace.

Diamonds: The diamonds are a red suit with a diamond marking. The diamonds have number cards from two to ten and four face cards- jack, queen, king, and ace.

Know the Value of Each Card

Each type of card has a unique value in poker. Often, this value is universal across the suits. For example, if an Ace of diamonds were the highest card you could hold, then an Ace of clubs would also be the highest card you could hold.

The Number Cards: Each suit has number cards from two to ten. These number cards are worth face value and often go in pairs, three of a kind, and flushes.

The Face Cards: The face cards have a higher value then the number cards, and can in order of increasing rank. The Jack is the lowest face card, followed by the Queen, the King, and then the Ace. However, in some games the Ace can represent both a high and low card.

You have to know your cards before you can play any game of poker, but learning the types of cards and their value is not hard and you will be ready to play in no time!

How to Play Red Dog

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Red Dog is a form of poker played at many casinos. Red Dog is a popular game because it is based largely on luck and little skill is involved. Poker players who have never played the game before can easily pick it up.

Red Dog is played on a table with up to sixteen players and one dealer. Red Dog is based on a three card game, compared to the five card game found at most poker tables. The dealer deals two cards face up to the table. It is the player’s job to then bet if the third card will fall between the values of the two cards already placed on the table.

Red Dog moves very quickly, and if a player is lucky it is an easy game to accumulate winnings in.

How Do I Play Red Dog?

Before the game is started all players who wish to be in that round of Red Dog must place an Ante bet. This Ante bet qualifies the player for the round. There is often a minimum, and occasionally a maximum, set by the casino.

Once every player has placed an Ante bet the dealer will deal two cards face up. These two cards will display a range that the third card must fall within.

The player then has the option to bet or fold based on the two cards on the table. If the players chooses to fold the Ante bet is lost. If a player wishes to continue they must raise his or her Ante bet.

Once all Ante bets are raised the dealer will place the third card face down on the table. If the third card falls within the range of the first two cards the player wins. If the third card is higher or lower then the first two cards dealt, the house wins.

Every card in the deck has a value similar to standard five card poker hands. Face cards are worth their face value. From there the cards are worth an ascending value with Jacks being eleven, Queens being 12, Kings being 13, and Aces being 14.

How Does Betting Work in Red Dog?

Betting in Red Dog is similar to most poker games. Every player is required to place an Ante bet within the casino’s pre-set minimum and maximum amounts.

Players who choose to stay in the game after the first two cards are dealt must raise their Ante bet once to stay in the hand. Often, players are allowed to raise their Ante bet as high as they wish, but most casinos still require a minimum amount.

In Red Dog the odds of winning are highly based on the first two cards dealt by the dealer. If the two cards are similar in face value, the odds are low for the players and high for the house. If the two cards have a difference of seven or more the odds are greatly in favor of the players.

Applying Strategy in Online Casinos

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Many online casino games are merely based on chance while others actually require skill and strategy.  The chance games offer the appeal of simplicity as all you do is click a few buttons and hope that you are lucky enough to win.  Some of the most popular examples are slots and roulette.   Players who opt for these games are often intimidated by their more strategic counterparts.  If you have been hesitant to play the more skillful casino games, we are here to tell you that a little strategy could be worth your while.

Common Strategy Games

There are quite a few online games that require strategy, with blackjack and the many types of poker being among the most commonly played.  So why would you want to pick up a more difficult game when you can easily play something simple?  There are mainly two reasons.  First off, strategy games tend to be more intriguing because they offer more of a challenge.  Perhaps the most important is reason is that these games have a payout percentage that is considerably higher than many chance games.  If you gamble online with the intent of winning money, this should give you all the incentive to step your game up.

Blackjack

Blackjack is often considered to be one of the most complex casino games that involve strategy.  This is because the player is constantly forced to make decisions and those choices increase in importance with each draw of the cards.  For example, not only do you have to choose whether to hit or stand, you also have to consider more advanced options such of splitting, doubling down, surrendering, and taking up insurance on your bet.  This is just the traditional game of blackjack.  There are many variations of the game and the strategy varies and can become more complex with each version.

Poker

Most types of poker require strategy as well.  This is especially the case with the popular variant known as Pai Gow.  In a game of Pai Gow poker, the player receives seven cards.  While there are many decisions that need to be made, the major element of strategy involved is managing two hands: a two-card hand, and a five-card hand.  The conditions that apply to these hands are often what intensify the importance of having a good strategy.  A certain level of skill is also required in other commonly played variants such as Texas Hold ‘em, Let it Ride and Red Dog.  It may not sound very intricate, but it is important for players to know when to adjust their bets, when to call, and when to fold.  The good thing is that this is skill that can be learned by simply playing and understanding how to analyze probable outcomes.

Strategic Features

Some online casinos offer features that make it a bit easier for players to apply sound strategy in skilled based games.  These features even benefit the chance player as they can wager in comfort with the reassurance that they will not blow their bankroll by making a bad decision.

An Introduction to Poker

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

Poker can seem to be an overwhelming game for those who have never played it. Many have only seen the game on TV in the various major tournaments that are broadcast. Poker’s growth has been unmistakable over the last decade as beginners continue to learn and play in casinos and online.

The basics of Poker

Poker is derived from a family of card games. The games varies in how hands are formed, how cards are dealt, limits on bets, as well as how many rounds of wagering are allowed. In the initial round, the betting starts with some form of a forced wager. These wagers play a big role in the outcome of poker games. Because of this, poker is a game that involves some unique strategy when compared to some other casino games that are based strictly on chance. Each successive player must match the initial wager or fold from the remainder of the hand. They also have the option of raising the hand. Savvy poker players can bluff their opponents with certain moves or non-moves by remaining unemotional regardless of their hand. The betting round concludes when each player has matched the last wager or folded. If all but one player folds during the course of any given round, the remaining player wins without showing his hand. If more than a single player remains in contention after the last round of betting, all hands are then shown and the winning hand collects the pot.

Winning poker hands

While there are some variations depending on the exact poker game that is being played, there is a general order of poker hands that will lead to a victory. Here is a basic list of the top ten winning poker hands:

1. Five of a kind-This hand features four cards of the same kind plus a wild card. If multiple players have five of a kind, the player with the higher value cards will win.

2. Straight flush-A straight flush is a hand of any five cards in sequence of the same suite. A royal flush occurs when an ace is the highest card in the straight.

3. Four of a kind-The same as a five of a kind with one fewer card.

4. A full house-This hand features three cards of one kind combined with two cards of a different kind.

5. A flush-In this hand, the player holds only cards of the same suite.

6. A straight-This hand features five cards in sequence but of different suites.

7. Three of a kind-A lower version of five of a kind and four of a kind.

8. Two pairs-This hand features two cards of one rank combined with two cards from another rank.

9. A pair-A hand with two cards of one rank.

10. A high card-In this hand, no two cards have the same rank.

With a basic understanding of whether to bet or fold and the main winning hands in the sport, poker newcomers aren’t too far away from being able to feel like one of the elite professional players that they see each year playing for millions of dollars at the World Series of Poker.

The Origins of Poker

Friday, October 9th, 2009

Poker has experienced some remarkable growth in this decade. It has become a part of popular culture. The annual World Series of Poker in Las Vegas draws thousands of entrants, including many celebrities. The sport has even taken off on television. It isn’t too hard to find some kind of poker tournament to enjoy, whether it’s the World Series event or a more intimate tourney featuring some of the superstars of the game. Of course, millions play the game online or at casinos throughout the world.

The popular game that is enjoyed today had a foundation that arguably dates all the way back to the 10th century.

The evolution of the game

There is some belief that a game similar to poker was first played by the Chinese in the second half of the 10th century. Another game with some of the elements of poker has been traced back to Germany in the 15th century. In the following century, card games were played in Spain and Persia with aspects of modern day poker. The Spanish game “Primero” is generally regarded as the real forerunner of modern day poker.

While these early games had some of the basics of poker, the development of the modern game really began in the early 19th century when the betting aspects of modern day poker were introduced. French colonials introduced poker style games in the New Orleans and Mississippi River regions over the first two decades of the 1800’s. The games were played in gambling halls and riverboats in the area. These early versions were played with a 20-card deck that featured tens, jacks, queens, kings and aces. In the 1830’s, poker style games using a 52-card deck began to be played.

Further growth during Civil War period

The development of poker continued in the 1860’s and the latter half of the 19th century. The game was commonly played by the soldiers of both armies during the Civil War. It was during this time that stud poker was introduced. Also, the straight became an element of poker during this period. Poker also became very popular in saloons across the Wild West in the last two decades of the 19th century.

The popularity swing of various poker games

With many different variations, poker has seen a few specific games stand out over periods of time as part of the evolution process of the game. The first poker game that dominated was 5 Card Draw. This style of poker was generally viewed as the most popular poker game from the Civil War era through the 1930’s. Shortly before World War II, the poker community began to embrace 7 Card Stud poker. This form of poker would lead the way until the early 1970’s. Then, Texas Hold’em poker became the trendy game of choice. The game was used as the title game for the initial World Series of Poker in 1970. Today, Texas Hold’em is widely viewed as the most popular poker game in the world.

Getting the Best Online Casino Odds

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

If you truly want to be successful at online gambling , then you need to make it a habit to learn more about the odds out in cyberspace.  While it seems like everyone would naturally seek out the more favorable options, research has shown that the average player consistently chooses casino games in which the odds lean more in favor of the house.  This indicates that players are either strictly in it for the fun, or simply don’t know the importance of, or to effectively calculate the odds.  The best way to get to the bottom of this issue is to take a look at a few games that have different levels of odds that work in your favor.

The Friendly Dice

Most gamblers have a clear understanding that craps is one of the best games you can play when it comes to favorable odds.  Being that it is essentially a skill game, craps is one that has proven to reward the player who has taken the time to make themselves familiar with all the intricacies involved.  In addition to blackjack, pai gow, poker and other casino games that typically rely more on smarts than blind chance, craps enables you to lower the house edge in a manner where it does not turn out to be an overwhelming hindrance against your success.

While craps is one of the better games to play, there are an alarming number of unfavorable odds to be found, mainly when proposition bets are involved.  If at all possible, prop bets are something you want to stay away from.  These type of bets are appealing to the proverbial risk taker who loves the thrill of knowing that a huge sum of money can either be won or loss on a single roll of the dice.  However, the more knowledgeable players should never be confused with the adrenaline junkies who come out broke more often not.  Any craps player who really understands the game will leave the tempting prompt bets to those who don’t know any better and simply can’t help themselves.

Picking the Right Wheel

If you are looking to play roulette online but still want to maintain reasonable odds, the type of variant you decide on will have a substantial impact on where you stand in this regard.   Anyone familiar with the game knows the European style of roulette comes with much better odds than the American version.  This is because there is only one “double zero” slot to worry about.  The result of this factor is that there are far less European roulette games to be found at the internet casinos.  On a good note, these versions do exist and can be found if you do a little research.

Once you have all of this information at your disposal, there may be a chance that you still prefer games that do not offer very good odds.  When this is the case, at least you will know and be able to make an informed decision instead of just going with the flow like so many other players.

Five Essential Online Gambling Tips for Intermediate Players

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

So, you think you know everything there is to know about online casino gambling?  You’ve played at so many casinos that nothing would surprise you these days.  Wonderful, confidence is a welcomed companion for any player, but let us help you expand on your knowledge with these five golden tips.

1.) Know the Game and How it is to Be Played

The slightest difference between two variations of poker could determine whether your approach results in winning or losing.  This is also true when playing games at different casinos.  Not fully grasping the ins and outs of the game could end up making your foolproof strategy null and void.  You could be the coldest player at the craps table in Vegas but the rules in the virtual world may be a little different than what you’re accustomed to.

2.) Make the Most the Bonus

Almost every online casino offers some type of bonus.  These specials are typically available to new and VIP players.  Keep in mind that this isn’t money you can simply cash out and buy a new pair of shoes with.  Consider it free gambling as the money can be used to increase your chances of wining.  Bonuses can be very tempting but before you take the bait, read the terms and conditions that come along with them.  In most cases, there are rules and stipulations that must be met in order to obtain the bonus that was offered to you.

3.) Guard Your Sensitive Information

Security has always been an issue in the online gambling industry.  For this reason, you need to take the appropriate measures to ensure that you are participating in a safe environment.  Your financial details, personal data and other sensitive information could all be up for grabs if you don’t.  Put an emphasis on doing business with a casino that protects user accounts with unique login IDs and passwords, and secures traveling data with strong encryption.  Safeguarding your info is crucial so you should never hesitate to inquire about the level of security provided by the casino.

4.) Play to Win

Anyone who has experienced them will tell you that online casino games are tons of fun.  This is made possible by the wide variety of games and vivid graphics that make it feel as if you are playing at your favorite land-based casino.  The atmosphere can be overwhelmingly exciting but since you’re putting your money on the line, why not play to win?   With all the bonuses, special promotions and progressive jackpots, there is definitely a lot of money to be won out there.   Put on your virtual game face and go out there and take the competition for all you can.

5. Have Fun

Winning is great, but like they say, it isn’t everything.  Just like in the real world, there will be times when you get lucky and win, but possibly more times when you lose.  The fact that you can play in the comfort of your home often adds to the fun, especially if you are someone who prefers to do without all the noise and ruckus that comes along with real casinos.  The jackpot is yours for the taking so just sit back, relax and enjoy the experience.

Your Options for Online Table Games

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Online casinos have exploded to popularity in recent years as more players come to grasp the intricacies of web-based wagering.  The major draw to these casinos is the array of games up for grabs.  The most common options you have are table games and there are quite a few to choose from.  Because there is such a wide variety, it is good to know just what is available so you don’t find yourself wondering aimlessly from room to room.

Head up with the Dealer

Table games are generally the same games you will find at the tables in brick and mortar casinos.  Two of the most popular choices are baccarat and black jack.  Both of these games are favorable to the player and make a great option for beginners.  Baccarat has become such a hit because it is simple and doesn’t require any real skill to play.  While the concept isn’t difficult, blackjack tends to be a little more challenging.  However, the fact that it does require a little know-how and gets so intense makes a favorite among serious players.  Because winning against the dealer is much harder, you will probably want to get familiar with blackjack before placing a wager online.

The Many Faces of Poker

There are many other card games available but most fail in comparison to the popularity of poker.  With poker you get options such as Texas Hold ‘Em, Let it Ride, Caribbean Stud Poker, Tri Card Poker and the list goes on.  In many of these games, you aren’t necessarily playing against other players, but against the dealer, similar to black jack and baccarat.  There are numerous poker rooms online, most of which offer generous incentives such as bonuses, promotional offers and huge progressive jackpots that seem to never stop growing.  Competition is heavy in the poker room so you definitely don’t want to approach the tables without your skills and virtual game face intact.

Dice and the Big Wheel

The main table games that don’t involve cards are craps and roulette.  Arguably the most popular land casino game, roulette typically gives the house a higher edge but that doesn’t take away from the excitement involved with spinning the wheel.  This game is often a first choice of beginners for the simple fact that it doesn’t require any skills – roulette is the ultimate game of luck.  Roulette comes in many niche variations such as French, European and American, which ironically is the least popular.  Craps is another risky game filled with plenty of sucker bets that make it harder to distinguish between the good wagers.  Though exciting an nearly as fun as the real life version, this isn’t a table you want to try without your head in the game.

The plethora of online casino games is enough to make your head spin.  While many of the rules are the same, it would be wise to get some information on online play before heading into a room.  Fortunately, there are numerous communities and tutorials that will provide you with essential tips on how to play virtually any game.  Even better, there is also a nice variety of casinos that will allow you to play for free and gain the confidence you need to play for money.
