Tips for Proper Roulette Play

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Roulette is an exciting, fast paced, popular casino game with high payouts. The rules are simple, pick a number or group of numbers and place a wager. The dealer will spin the wheel and shoot the ball in the opposite direction, if it lands on a number you’ve selected, you win.

When joining a roulette table, there is a certain etiquette that must be followed in order to continue playing the game. The following tips will allow you to slide into any roulette game and participate in a professional manner. These include:

  • You can cover other chips
  • You can place bets after the ball is spun
  • Don’t place bets after the dealer says, “No more bets”

Unlike many other games, everyone is given a different colored set of chips. Therefore if another player is on a number you’d like to bet, don’t get discouraged. In Roulette its acceptable to place your wager on top of the chips of another player.

Also unlike other casino games where bets cannot be made after action has begun, Roulette allows betting after the ball has been spun. The dealer will always indicate when betting has ceased. This usually occurs when the ball begins to slow down. At that time the dealer will wave their hands and yell out, “no more bets.” Any bets made after this do not count.

Since roulette has a high house edge, it’s a difficult game to consistently beat. There is one pointer for winning in the short term; play at a full table. Finding a full game will offer approximately 30 spins per hour. This will slow down the amount of time your amount is susceptible to the house edge.

There are many individuals that claim to have the next best roulette system that will win every time. Unfortunately this is never the case. Over the long-term, the house will always come out on top. The final tip is to never buy into any roulette systems, be it on the Internet or in person. It will simply result in lost money.

These tips will allow you to know the proper etiquette when placing wagers on Roulette games. With many players flocking to the Roulette table because of the payouts, it should be easy to find a full table which will decrease the amount of time your money is exposed to the house edge. If you simply follow the dealer’s direction while betting, there should be no problem when playing this simple, easy to learn game.

The Fundamentals of Blackjack

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Blackjack, also known as 21, is a staple in casinos that provide table games. This is one of the oldest and most popular betting games offered. There are many different limits and anyone can play. The rules are fairly simple with the primary objective being to beat the dealer.

The Basics

Blackjack can be played with one to eight decks of cards (this is an effort to diminish the card-counting technique). Many casinos are not only using multiple decks, but have continuous shuffling machines. In single and double deck games, the dealer holds and shuffles the cards and distributes them. In a multi-deck game, the dealer distributes the cards from a shoe (a box that holds the cards).

One and two deck games are extremely uncommon in casinos with most dealing from the shoe. The hand is dealt face up to all the players at the table who are not allowed to touch their cards. The game is played in a heads up fashion with everyone against the dealer. If the total count of your cards is less than or equal to 21 and is higher than the dealers hand you win.

If your hand totals over 21 you bust which is an automatic forfeit of chips. If the dealer also busts, you still do not win. The player always makes the first move. Unlike other card games, the suit of the card has no bearing on the outcome of the hand.

The Card Values

Cards 2-10 are counted as shown. All the face cards have a value equal to 10 and an ace counts as either a 1 or an 11. For instance, an ace and an 8 can either be combined to equal either 9 or 19 depending on the strategy for that hand. Hard hands are those that do not contain an ace. A soft hand is one that does contain an ace.

The Table

A blackjack table is shaped as a semi-circle. On the felt, there is a circle and a square for each seat. Chips must be purchased from the dealer and a bet is only valid if the chips are placed in the circle. Once all bets have been placed play can commence.

Blackjack is a fairly simple game consisting of simple math. Good decisions are based on mathematical calculations. Blackjack is one of the most fun and popular casino games due to its simplicity and immediate action.

Blackjack vs. Super Fun 21

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Derived from Blackjack, Super Fun 21 has similar mechanics, but different rules. The mechanics are so similar many novice card players sit down and think they are playing a single deck game of Blackjack. In Nevada, the game cannot be called Blackjack. Super Fun 21 is a fairly new novelty casino game that was created mainly for the tourists. Most Blackjack experts will avoid this game when possible.

The similarities between the two games are mostly mechanical. For instance, aces can be counted as either a one or an eleven. Also all face cards within the deck are valued at ten with all other cards representing face value. Like Blackjack, the player bets first and is dealt two cards face up. One of the dealer’s cards is dealt face up and one face down. The player has the option to hit or stay, just like in Blackjack.

On the other hand, there are specific differences that make Super Fun 21 unique from Blackjack including:

  • The dealer hits on soft 17
  • Players have the option to double down on any cards
  • The game is played with only 1-2 decks of cards
  • A hand that totals 21 with 5 or more cards pays 2 to 1
  • Players can split pairs up to four times
  • A hand that totals 20 or less with six cards automatically wins
  • Natural blackjack always wins

One of the biggest and most important variations is that the natural blackjack only pays even money. In a regular game of blackjack it pays 3 to 2. The exception to this rule is if the cards that make a natural Blackjack are of the diamond suit.

Like all other casino games, the house maintains the edge over the players. In this case, the house has an edge of 1.16 percent with a single deck of cards and 1.30 percent with a double deck. When searching for a Super Fun 21 game to play, find one that’s using a single deck, this will improve your winnings over the long term.

Super Fun 21 is a novelty game mainly played by tourists. After a few years, it may fall into the mainstream table games. The game is fairly easy to learn if you’re familiar with Blackjack. While the mechanics of the game are similar, there are many rules that differ. Super Fun 21 is an exciting substitute if you’re looking to try something new and exciting.

A Guide to Video Poker Rules

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Video poker is an electronic casino game that is based on five card draw. The program is placed into a small computerized compartment similar to a slot machine. The game is fairly simple to learn, but as with most games in a casino or online, the house has the advantage. Video poker can be found at almost all casinos and many have them near the drinking establishments on the operator’s property.

The Rules and the Video Poker Machine

Gameplay begins with the player inserting credits into the machine. This can be in the form of paper money or a player’s card. The player then proceeds to place a bet of one or multiple credits and pressing the deal button. The player is shown their hand and offered the chance to shed one or more cards to exchange them for new ones. This is known as the draw aspect of the game. These are all drawn from a virtual deck that represents a regular deck of cards.

Once the machine has issued new cards, it pays out if the hand played matches the listed winning combinations usually posted on the pay table on the video poker monitor.  These pay tables indicate the payout for various hands depending on their rarity. The rarer a hand is, the higher it pays out. For instance, a pair of jacks would pay even money. On the other hand, a royal flush (the rarest of all hands) would payout the maximum.

In addition to winning individual hands, there are other ways to profit. For instance, many video poker machines offer progressive jackpots or prizes. This entices the user to play more frequently and place higher wagers. Although the game is based on five card draw, the customer isn’t actually playing against another hand. Rather, they win by acquiring a specific combination of cards.

Regulation

In order to keep the equipment validated, calibrated and fair, video poker machines are regulated by individual state or Indian gaming agency. These regulatory bodies mandate that machines deal random card values out of a virtual card deck. The Nevada Gaming Commission began this rule with other states following shortly thereafter. All video poker machines are tested prior to going live on the casino floor.

Video poker can provide entertainment for hours on end. Since every casino is in business to make money, the machines are set to slightly favor the house. Although skill is involved, it’s extremely difficult to be popular in the long run. Consequently, it’s best to enjoy the excitement and have fun!

Online Casinos that offer Practice Mode

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

When first starting out at a new casino, it’s beneficial to play a few games in practice mode. This helps the user get used to the casino interface so they don’t make a mistake during a live game. Since many online casinos do not have a clear description of the rules of specific games, it’s important to practice while learning a new game. This will help the player adjust to the rules, betting structure, etc.

What to do if a Casino Doesn’t Offer Practice Mode

Unfortunately, in some instances online casinos do not offer practice games. They expect the player to jump right in and begin betting. If this is the case, either find another casino that does provide practice areas or play at the lowest wagering limits possible. That way only a minimal amount of money is lost while learning the game.

How to Find Casinos that Offer Practice Mode

The best method to finding online casinos that offer some type of practice mode is to search through the interface after downloading the application. There should be a whole area dedicated to free play. Most casinos will start the player off with a number of free credits to use within the free play section. The credits hold no monetary value.

All major casinos usually provide some type of free play or practice area. Many even offer tournaments that are free to enter and the winner receives a monetary prize. This is another excellent method for practicing. Players in these tournaments make more logical bets as there is actual money to be won.

Disadvantages of Practice Mode

The only real disadvantage to playing in practice mode is that many other players will place wild and erratic bets since there is no real money involved. This is also a common pattern found at lower wagering limits as well. This type of betting can be frustrating to users trying to hone in and improve their skills. Also, this type of betting is not representative of a true game.

With so many casinos to choose from on the internet, offering hundreds of games, the best way to select them is to find a casino that offers a game you’re interested in. If they have it, ensure you’ll receive free credits to play in the practice area. This will prepare you to participate in real money games and know all the rules, betting structure, nuances and the interface.

The Rules of Baccarat

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Baccarat has historically been a high-roller game for gaming whales. Although slight variations have been changed the game, the rules have remained fairly consistent since its conception. This raises the question: is Baccarat such a difficult game that the average player cannot participate in its excitement?

The short answer to that question is no, the rules of the game are not difficult. However, there are a few peculiarities that make it an interesting game. There are only two hands dealt each round despite the number of individuals playing. One hand is the banker hand and the other is the player hand. Those at the table may bet on either hand. The player holding the shoe must either bet on the banker hand or pass.

The game begins with the bettor holding the shoe sliding one card onto the table which is passed facedown to the dealer who then passes it to the customer with the largest bet. The next card, which is the first banker card, is placed next to the shoe. The bettor proceeds to deal another player and banker card. The dealer requests the player hand and the customer with the largest bet looks at the cards before passing them to the dealer.

The two player cards are turned face up and the dealer announces the point total for the hand. The dealer requests the banker hand at which point the shoe holder looks at the cards and passes them to the dealer. If the player or banker total requires a draw, the deal will say, “Card for the player/banker” who will turn it face up.

The object of the game is to bet on the two card hand that totals closest to nine. Cards ten to king do not hold any value and all other cards are worth their value; ace is worth one point. If the total is greater than ten, the second card is the value. The point total will establish whether a hand receives a third card.

Automatic winners occur when the banker totals a nine or eight. Players stay on totals of six or seven and zero through five warrants an additional card. The banker stays on seven, eight, and nine and draws on zero, one and two. The banker hits on three (unless the player’s third card is an eight), four (unless the player’s third card is a one, eight, nine or ten), hits on five (unless the player’s third card is a four, five, six or seven) and hits on six.

In addition to the regular betting, bettors can place a wager that the two hands will have an equal number of points at the end of the game. This pays off at 8-to-1 odds but carries a 9.5 percent house edge. Baccarat is a fairly simple game of addition that anyone can play. Just make sure to have a big bankroll!

Utilizing a Blackjack Strategy to Enhance Your Game

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Professional Blackjack players always walk into the casino with some type of strategy. Since Blackjack is one of the few games in the casino where the player can have an advantage over the house, it’s best to practice and eventually master these strategies in order to be successful.

The basic strategy of Blackjack is developed utilizing mathematics. Different strategies have been tested over the many years since its conception. When utilized properly, Blackjack strategy reduces the edge the house has over the player to a minimal amount. Strategies are adjusted to conform to different variations of the game.

Getting Started with a Strategy Chart

The most effective method for learning the basic Blackjack strategy is by memorizing a basic strategy chart. This chart illustrates exactly how to play your initial two cards against the dealers one face-up card. Memorization of the basic strategy chart is only one piece of the puzzle. Proper starting play is beneficial, but your moves after taking a hit are just as important.

Playing Pairs

Here are a few tips for playing paired starting cards:

  • Aces or eights  – Split
  • Twos or threes – Split if the dealer has 2-7 or else hit
  • Fours – Split if the dealer has 5-6 or else hit
  • Fives – Double down if the dealer has 2-9 or else hit
  • Sixes – Split if the dealer has 2-6 or else hit
  • Sevens – Split 2-7 or else hit
  • Nines – Split 2-9, stay if the dealer has 7,10 or ace
  • Tens – Stay

Playing Hard Hands

The following are tips to play two starting cards that do not hold an ace:

  • If you have less than eight, hit
  • Nine – Double down if the dealer has 3-6 or else hit
  • Ten – Double down against 2-9 or else hit
  • Eleven – Double down against 2-10 or hit if the dealer has an ace
  • Twelve – Hit against  2 or 3, stay against 4-6, hit everything else
  • 13-16 – Stay against 2-6, otherwise hit
  • 17-21 – Stay

Playing Soft Hands

These final tips pertain to starting cards that contain an ace:

  • Holding ace 2 or ace 3 – Double down against 5 or 6, or else hit
  • Ace 4 or ace 5 – Double down against 4-6 or else hit
  • Ace 6 – Double down against 3-6 or else hit
  • Ace 7 – Stay against 2, 7 or 8; double down against 3-6 or else hit
  • Ace 8 or ace 9 – Stay

By following these basic strategies, you can become a better poker player and have a more defined view of the game. More advanced techniques used in Blackjack build on this basic strategy.

Are You Betting too Modestly at the Poker Table?

Friday, June 4th, 2010

How you place your bets is just as important as how you play the game at the poker table. While you may break even, or make it out ahead, if you are overly cautious with your bets, you could be costing yourself a lot of wins. While being too aggressive can run you through your entire bankroll before the poker game is over, being too modest with your bets can take the thrill and the wins out of the game. Take a look at your betting style and see if you are being too modest at the table.

Are Your Bets too Modest?

If you think you have a good hand, do you raise? Modest betters are hesitant to raise, even if they are pretty sure they are holding a good poker hand. They are too afraid of loosing both their ante and their raise that they shy away from the potential wins. A better strategy is to raise a good hand, but raise it cautiously. Do not bet more then you can afford to loose.

If your first deal is a bad hand, but you can turn it around, do you fold? Modest betters are quick to fold, sometimes too quick. While you shouldn’t play a hand you are certain is going to be a loser, you shouldn’t be too quick to fold either. Poker is about taking risks, and sometimes you have to wait for the second draw to see how a hand turns out.

If another player tries to out bet you, do you fold? While a poker player should never price himself or herself out of a hand, modest betters will often feel too much pressure when another player starts to raise. If you know you are holding a high card hand, get in a competitive mode and match that player raise for raise.

Do you avoid higher stakes poker games? No player should join a table with stakes higher then their bankroll can reasonable afford, but modest betters often avoid those high stakes tables regardless. If you have a good skill for the game, and the bankroll to handle it, why not join a high stakes table every once in awhile? Higher stakes can mean bigger wins and more excitement.

You should never bet more aggressively then your bankroll can handle, but being too modest at the poker table takes a lot of the thrill out of the game. Try easing yourself in to being less cautious with your money, you may be surprised at how much fun you have, and how much you win.

Online Slots Explained

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Many seasoned players consider online slots to be the easiest casino game to play, but people that have never played a slot before can easily be confused by a slot game’s many buttons, betting options, symbols and combinations. Once you’ve mastered these four main features you’ll have no trouble transitioning between slots titles.

Slot Buttons

Regardless of whether you’re playing live or online slots, a classic three-reel machine or a multi-line video slot, the buttons used are much the same if not identical from one slot to the next. Virtually every slot machine has these buttons: Bet One, Bet Max, Spin and Cash Out. The buttons are pretty self-explanatory. Multi-line slots have more betting buttons; the top row will determine the number of lines you are betting on and the bottom will be your wager per line. Hitting the Bet Max button automatically makes the maximum wager. If you want to repeat your last bet, just hit the spin button. This button is also often used to activate a bonus. When you’re ready to leave, or if you want to withdraw a big win, just hit the Cash Out button. Some slots also have special bonus buttons.

Slot Betting Options

As mentioned above, you’ll have the option of choosing how many lines you want to bet on and how much you want to bet per line. Classic three-reel slots have only one payline, and thus you will likely only be able to bet a few credits per spin. Multi-line slots may have 20 or more paylines, which means that you could be betting hundreds of credits per spin. Check the bet window to see what your current wager is. If you accidentally bet too much on a spin, don’t panic! You can change your bet quickly and easily after every spin.

Slot Symbols and Combinations

Each slot game has its own unique set of symbols, though many classic symbols are repeated across several different titles. Wild symbols may act as any symbol necessary to complete a combination while multipliers can increase the value of an existing combination and bonus symbols can trigger a special in-game bonus. To find out what each symbol and/or combination of symbols is worth, simply check your game’s paytable. The paytable also explains how to earn and win bonus games. Don’t worry about memorizing the payouts, though – most slot games automatically draw a line through combinations, making it easy for new players to see how they won.

How to Come Out a Winner at the Slot Machines

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Slot machines are a tremendous money maker for casinos. They are also the most popular game in the house. People love slot machines because they are easy to play, can be very entertaining, and they do often pay out. However, slot machines can also be an easy way to loose your entire bankroll. It is important to have a strategy going in to the casino for every game you play, even slot machines. You stand a much better chance of winning if you plan ahead.

How to Come Out a Winner at the Slot Machines

Play Multiple Pay Lines

Machines with multiple pay lines offer more chances to win. However, they also offer more chances to loose. You have to be realistic when playing this type of slot machines, but if you play smart, you stand to win a lot more then you would on a standard reel slot machine.

Play Higher Denomination Machines

The quarter and dollar machines typically offer more pay outs then the nickel and penny slots. If your bankroll can afford it, stick to the higher denomination slot machines. You can also move up to the higher slot machines once you have increased your bankroll on the smaller machines.

Do not Spend Your Winnings

One of the easiest ways to ensure you walk away a winner at the slot machines is to save what you win. Anytime you win, cash out of the machine and start over with new money from your bank roll. This way you are ensuring that you only spend your bankroll, meaning you take away some money from the slot machine when you leave.

Do not Play a Slot Machine That is not Paying

A lot of slot players will stay on one slot machine, even if it has not paid out, under the assumption that it will eventually pay them big. Sometimes, a slot machine can go from not paying at all to hitting a jackpot, but slot machines are not designed this way on purpose. All slot machines have to pay out a certain percent of the time, but there is no guarantee on when that will happen. If the slot machine you are playing has not paid you in several rounds, then move to another machine. Your odds are much higher in moving then staying at the same slot.
