A Review of Poker Hand Rankings

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

The basis of all poker-based games is the hand rankings. It’s important to know the different rankings (what beats what) in order to be successful in all forms of poker. The following are just a few of the several of types of poker played around the world:

  • Texas Hold’em
  • Five Card Draw
  • Five Card Stud
  • Caribbean Poker
  • Seven Card Stud
  • Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo
  • Omaha Hi
  • Omaha Hi-Lo
  • Omaha 8
  • 3-Card Poker
  • 4-Card Poker
  • Indian Poker
  • Chicago

There are ten hand rankings that are used in each of these games to determine the winning player. Starting from the weakest to best, the hands are:

  • High card
  • One pair
  • Two pair
  • Three of a kind
  • Straight
  • Flush
  • Full house
  • Four of a kind
  • Straight flush
  • Royal straight flush

If no player at a table has a pair or better, the individual with the highest card wins. Sometimes only having an ace is good enough to take the pot. One pair is two cards that match such as Ace-Ace (which is the highest pair possible) or any similar combination. Two pair is two sets of cards of the same rank such as Ace-Ace, King-King which is the highest possible two pair.

Three of a kind is three cards of the same rank such as Ace-Ace-Ace which is the highest three of a kind possible. A straight is when all five cards are in a row, but not the same suit such as 10-Jack-Queen-King-Ace which is the highest strait possible. A flush occurs when all five cards are of the same suit, but not in order such as 9-Jack-Queen-King-Ace. Having a high card such as a King or Ace is important to beat lesser flushes.

A full house is a set of three of a kind and a pair such as Ace-Ace-Ace-King-King which is the highest full house possible. Four of a kind is four cards of the same ranking such as Ace-Ace-Ace-Ace-King which is the highest possible full house combination. A straight flush is all cards of the same suit in a row such as 5-6-7-8-9 which is the highest possible straight flush combination.

Finally a royal straight flush occurs when the player has exactly 10-Jack-Queen-King-Ace of the same suit. This is the rarest of all hands and beats every other hand in poker. The chances of landing a royal flush are slim due to the exact card combination required.

These hand rankings are the bread and butter of all poker. Memorizing them will help you become a better poker player.

The Casino Control Commission is a government regulatory body in the state of New Jersey. One of the five commissioners is also appointed by the Governor to head the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA). Another commissioner may also be appointed to the CRDA as a replacement for the commissioner of the Department of Community Affairs or the Department of Commerce and Economic Development.

Blackjack vs. Super Fun 21

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Derived from Blackjack, Super Fun 21 has similar mechanics, but different rules. The mechanics are so similar many novice card players sit down and think they are playing a single deck game of Blackjack. In Nevada, the game cannot be called Blackjack. Super Fun 21 is a fairly new novelty casino game that was created mainly for the tourists. Most Blackjack experts will avoid this game when possible.

The similarities between the two games are mostly mechanical. For instance, aces can be counted as either a one or an eleven. Also all face cards within the deck are valued at ten with all other cards representing face value. Like Blackjack, the player bets first and is dealt two cards face up. One of the dealer’s cards is dealt face up and one face down. The player has the option to hit or stay, just like in Blackjack.

On the other hand, there are specific differences that make Super Fun 21 unique from Blackjack including:

  • The dealer hits on soft 17
  • Players have the option to double down on any cards
  • The game is played with only 1-2 decks of cards
  • A hand that totals 21 with 5 or more cards pays 2 to 1
  • Players can split pairs up to four times
  • A hand that totals 20 or less with six cards automatically wins
  • Natural blackjack always wins

One of the biggest and most important variations is that the natural blackjack only pays even money. In a regular game of blackjack it pays 3 to 2. The exception to this rule is if the cards that make a natural Blackjack are of the diamond suit.

Like all other casino games, the house maintains the edge over the players. In this case, the house has an edge of 1.16 percent with a single deck of cards and 1.30 percent with a double deck. When searching for a Super Fun 21 game to play, find one that’s using a single deck, this will improve your winnings over the long term.

Super Fun 21 is a novelty game mainly played by tourists. After a few years, it may fall into the mainstream table games. The game is fairly easy to learn if you’re familiar with Blackjack. While the mechanics of the game are similar, there are many rules that differ. Super Fun 21 is an exciting substitute if you’re looking to try something new and exciting.

Black Gaming Receives the Approval for a Bankruptcy Plan

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

Black Gaming, LLC, based out of Mesquite, Nevada was approved for a Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization plan. Due to the recession, Black Gaming was unable to pay its debt of $253.4 million. During the case, the value of all assets was estimated at between $85 and $90 million.

What Does this Mean?

The reorganization plan will allow Black Gaming to restructure its debt so the entity will owe $143 million less. The result is a much more manageable financial structure. This will help them become a stronger organization that will focus more on providing the best entertainment value for their money.

The Terms of the Bankruptcy Plan

There are a few terms of the plan in which the company must adhere. For instance the $14.8 million Senior Credit Facility that Black Gaming owes Wells Fargo Foothill Inc must be paid in full. Additionally, any unsecured claims which include those from vendors are to be paid in cash to the maximum allowed by the bankruptcy code.

Also the Senior Secured Noteholders will replace their notes, valued at around $143 million, for a new credit facility equating to approximately $62.5 million. Furthermore the Senior Subordinated Noteholders will have the ability to purchase equity interests in the Reorganized Black Gaming as a substitute for their notes and claims.

In addition, Black Gaming executives, owner Robert R. Black Sr. and a Newport Global Advisor must contribute $18.25 million as a substitute for 100 percent of the established equity interests within the reorganized company. All executives will remain in their current roles with their current titles.

The Unsecured Noteholders

Unfortunately the Unsecured Noteholders are still owed $75 million by Black Gaming. As a result attorneys were considering filing an objection to the reorganization plan as it doesn’t include this group. They were also scrutinizing the plan as well as the value of the assets presented during the case.

Last week the deadline came and went with no objections filed. The U.S. Trustees office also had a few objections, but Black Gaming overcame these as well. Accordingly the terms of the bankruptcy plan will remain as-is.

Gaming across the country has been damaged by the recession and this is one result. This plan should help Black Gaming return to profitable margins while paying off their debt. Unfortunately the Unsecured Noteholders will suffer. Since Black Gaming is a major employer and presence in Mesquite, Nevada, this action needed to be taken.
