How Risky Are Online Casinos?

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Some people shy away from online casinos because they feel the risk of modern internet crimes is simply too great and even trying out an online casino wouldn’t be worth it. While it is true that no website security is full proof, how risky are online casinos really?

The Risks of Online Casinos

There are some very real risks to playing in an online casino. For example, identity theft is a very real possibility anytime you are entering personal information online. Online casinos require a lot of personal information, such as your full name, address, credit card numbers, or bank account information. If your personal information gets stolen, you could be spend years trying to repair the damage.

There are other risks to your personal computer as well. The downloadable files that many online casinos use to play their games can come unknowingly loaded with malicious data. When you execute the program, you can unleash a very damaging virus on to your computer.

While there is a small risk involved when gambling online, the majority of the online casinos websites are very safe to use. Online casinos companies spend a small fortune in software and other securities to protect their patrons. As long as you are gambling at a reputable site, then your risks are very minimal. However, less then reputable sites do not always use the same high levels of security as their larger opponents.

Be sure to research any site fully before giving away any of your personal information, even just an email address. If you cannot find the information on the casino’s website, then give them a call directly. They should be happy to explain their security policy, and if they can’t or won’t maybe you should look for another casino that possesses a higher level of security or a more diligent reputation when it comes to client confidentiality.

In addition to the casino offering protection to their valued clients, it is very important to obtain software for your computer that protects you on a local level. For example, installing a firewall, anti-virus software, and software designed at detecting malware in real-time will enhance your overall protection. This will ensure that you can enjoy a safe and potentially profitable experience at your online casino.

Casino Bonuses and Promotions – Getting What You Deserve

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Despite the fact that many people are first drawn to online casinos by the promise of a big bonus, surprisingly few online players really understand how to get the most from their preferred site’s promotional system. With any luck, you received an automatic sign-up bonus with your first deposit, but there’s also a chance that you were one of the many disappointed masses that accidentally forgot to enter a coupon code or didn’t make the minimum deposit and missed out on bonus money altogether. Here is a brief checklist of things to consider when pursuing online casino bonuses.

Check the Promo Page Often

Many players miss out on bonuses and promotions simply because they don’t know they’re available. The easiest way to find out what you might be entitled to is to check out a casino’s promotions page. If you’ve already made your first deposit, then it’s probably too late to claim that big and oh-so coveted sign-up match, but it’s not too late to get free entry to ongoing slots tournaments or to get reload bonuses on future deposits.

Know What Each Bonus or Promo Really Is

There are many different types of bonuses and promotions; not all of them are instant, available to everyone or available all the time. For example, a no deposit bonus is an instant cash bonus that virtually any new member can earn, but a new depositor freeroll is a special kind of tournament that’s open only to players that have made a recent deposit. Some bonuses and promotions are only available to players that have reached a certain level in a casino’s VIP program.

While a few bonuses are instant – meaning the cash is automatically added to your account – virtually all bonuses have fine print attached. For example, to be able to cash out winnings earned with instant bonus money you will probably have to meet playthrough requirements. That means that you will have to bet several times the amount of money you were awarded before you can withdraw winnings from that money. Some big bonuses – namely those hefty first deposit matches – must be earned within a set period of time. That means that any bonus money not earned or released by playthrough by the end of the bonus period is forfeited.

Track Your Player Points

The easiest way to earn bonuses, prizes, cash or comps is via player loyalty points. That’s because these points are tallied automatically and are awarded to every cash player at an online casino. Many casual players don’t  check their points balance on a regular basis and thus forfeit any earned rewards by not redeeming them when eligible.

How to Come Out a Winner at the Slot Machines

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Slot machines are a tremendous money maker for casinos. They are also the most popular game in the house. People love slot machines because they are easy to play, can be very entertaining, and they do often pay out. However, slot machines can also be an easy way to loose your entire bankroll. It is important to have a strategy going in to the casino for every game you play, even slot machines. You stand a much better chance of winning if you plan ahead.

How to Come Out a Winner at the Slot Machines

Play Multiple Pay Lines

Machines with multiple pay lines offer more chances to win. However, they also offer more chances to loose. You have to be realistic when playing this type of slot machines, but if you play smart, you stand to win a lot more then you would on a standard reel slot machine.

Play Higher Denomination Machines

The quarter and dollar machines typically offer more pay outs then the nickel and penny slots. If your bankroll can afford it, stick to the higher denomination slot machines. You can also move up to the higher slot machines once you have increased your bankroll on the smaller machines.

Do not Spend Your Winnings

One of the easiest ways to ensure you walk away a winner at the slot machines is to save what you win. Anytime you win, cash out of the machine and start over with new money from your bank roll. This way you are ensuring that you only spend your bankroll, meaning you take away some money from the slot machine when you leave.

Do not Play a Slot Machine That is not Paying

A lot of slot players will stay on one slot machine, even if it has not paid out, under the assumption that it will eventually pay them big. Sometimes, a slot machine can go from not paying at all to hitting a jackpot, but slot machines are not designed this way on purpose. All slot machines have to pay out a certain percent of the time, but there is no guarantee on when that will happen. If the slot machine you are playing has not paid you in several rounds, then move to another machine. Your odds are much higher in moving then staying at the same slot.

Why Emotions are Important in Poker

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

When some people think of poker they conjure up memories of the wild west, where cowboys would play round after round of poker in a whiskey bar. Eventually, flipping over the table, drawing their guns, and announcing their opponent was a cheater. This mental image gives poker an elusive and dangerous appeal. In reality, controlling your emotions and keeping a level head is much more important then a display of bravery in poker, no matter how good the movie cowboys made that table flipping look. There are several reasons why it is important to keep your emotions at bay at the poker table.

Why Emotions are Important to Good Poker Playing

A calm head leads to better moves. Poker is an art form, and like any art form poker takes a lot of skill. The calmer you are in your movements, the better you will be at calculating the right moves. Since poker involves several rounds of drawing and betting, it is important to keep a level head throughout the whole game so you do not blow your hand.

Excitability leads to poorly chosen bets. We have all seen it at the table. A poker player will win a few hands and let it get to their head. Next, the player is betting wildly. Calling when they should fold. Raising when they have next to nothing in their hand. Before you know it, that player has gone through their entire bankroll. This is why it is important to keep your emotions in check when you are betting. The calmer you are when you make your bets, the more likely they will be good ones, and good betting keeps you in the game longer.

Calm reactions will prevent your opponents from taking advantage of you. Many poker players believe that loud-mouthed or over-reacting players is a sign of a fish, or a new player to the game. Once an experienced player notices these traits in your poker playing, the will focus on you. If you are new to poker, it is best to keep a low profile. Experienced players will be able to read you much better then you can read them, why give them the upper hand?

Playing it cool is one of the most important skills to learn for any poker player. Anyone can learn to do it with practice. Just remember to pay attention to your emotions at every point in the game.

Online Gambling Amendment Approved in Massachusetts

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

A big moment in online gaming and the state of  Massachusetts happened recently when an amendment approving online gambling was voted on and approved by the Massachusetts House of Representatives. The amendment met the approval of the Representatives after two years of deliberation between the state and the Poker Players Alliance- a grassroots organization supporting the rights of poker players in the United States.

Massachusetts Approves of Online Gaming

The bill, which will be signed into law shortly in the state of Massachusetts, clearly states that gambling online shall be legal in the state of Massachusetts. The bill came to pass after a previous bill was brought forth in 2008 that made online gaming illegal. The penalty for playing poker online in Massachusetts came with a two year jail sentence or a fine up to $25,000.

Shortly after the first bill was put in to motion, the Poker Players Alliance began working with state legislatures for an amendment that removed the criminal charges associated with online gambling. Two years later, their efforts paid off.

The Poker Players Alliance

The Poker Players Alliance is a nationwide grassroots organize. Currently, there are over one million members in the United States, and 25,000 members in the state of Massachusetts. Poker Players Alliance is headed by John Pappas. John Pappas and the other members of the alliance work closely with legislatures to influence the outcome of gambling related laws in the United States. Massachusetts was a big win for the organization.

What The New Law Means for Massachusetts

The new bill will put an end to any fines or jail time associated with online gambling going forward. This does not mean, however, that the state does support, or will support, other gambling endeavors in the future. However, it is still a big win for gambling and online poker enthusiasts in the state of Massachusetts. Any resident who is of legal age to gamble is now welcome to do so inside their state.

Common Blackjack Strategy Concepts Explained

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Why is a good blackjack strategy in such high demand? Any educated card player knows that blackjack is one of the few casino games that can actually promise a savvy player a profit. Taking the right strategy to the right table can also mean taking money home every time you play, and every gambler knows that there’s no incentive that’s more inspiring than money.

That said, some blackjack fans have decided that they can make more money by fleecing their fellow players than by trying to master the game. When searching for solid strategy advice it can be hard to weed out the frauds. If you’re a blackjack beginner, don’t waste any of your  burgeoning bankroll buying strategies or systems – you can find everything you need to win for free. Here’s a basic breakdown of what you need to know to beat online blackjack.

How to Win at Blackjack

One reason that many first-time blackjack players fall for bad strategies or system scams is because they don’t really understand how to win the game. It’s pretty straightforward. Unlike other popular card games like poker, blackjack players don’t compete against each other, so the only hand you have to beat is the dealer’s. Sounds easy enough right? To beat the dealer, you must get a hand that’s closer to 21 than theirs without going over. And that’s just the beginning. What makes winning the game especially challenging is the fact that you can only see one of the dealer’s cards when choosing your moves, plus they get to make their moves after all the players have finished.

Hit/Stand Strategy

Winning blackjack then is all about knowing when you should hit and when you should stand. One advantage that players have over dealers is the house rules. Per casino rules, dealers must stand on a hand of 16 or 17 (it varies by casino). Hypothetically you have no way of knowing what the dealer’s face down card is (we’ll get to card counting next). So, most hit/stand blackjack strategies advise players to pretend that the face down card has a value of ten. You will then use the dealer’s hypothetical hand to determine whether your hand is high enough to stand or if you’ll need to hit. Many blackjack strategy sites offer cheats that can tell you the best times to hit or stand for every possible hand.

Card Counting

Most movies you see about blackjack pros are really about card counting. Card counting is a strategy wherein the player tracks which cards have been pulled from the deck and uses that information to determine what cards are left in the deck and by extension what cards are now likely to be dealt to them and/or the dealer. When combined with a good hit/stand strategy, card counting can make blackjack very lucrative, but many casinos have taken measures – like using shoes – that make this strategy difficult to implement.
