Why You Should Keep Track of Your Poker Results

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Most poker players would tell you that they “break even” if you were to ask them how they fair in poker games overall. The reason for this is that most players do not know how well, or how poorly, they are doing. They do not keep a record showing the results of their game. However, ask a poker professional how they fair in their games and they can tell you exactly because they understand the importance of keeping track. If you do not have a record of your past games, you should start now.

Why You Should Keep Track of Your Poker Playing

Manage Your Bankroll

The most practical reason to keep track of your gambling is to have a firm grasp on your bankroll. If you are an avid poker player, you likely have money set aside for you to play your game and you should manage this money as firmly as you do your checking account. By keeping a record of your total wins and losses, you will know exactly how well you fair in poker games overall. Plus, having a record of your bankroll will make things a lot easier during tax time if you win a big jackpot.

Analyze Your Poker Game

You often look for ways to improve your game, but how can you improve your skills efficiently if you do not know what needs improving? Take notes of every game as soon as you are done playing. Note any mistakes you made, hands you played extremely well, or thoughts on the other players. You can refer to these notes later when you are looking for a weak spot in your poker strategies. On the flip side, having a list of good moves you have made in the game works as a great motivational tool.

Gain Some Perspective

Poker players can have a very selective memory when it comes to their past poker games or tournaments. A mid range, or even poor game, can get over-inflated in our memories. While telling the tall tell of your poker wins around the break room is not going to hurt anyone, it does you no good to have a false sense of how well you are really playing. By keeping track of your games, you can keep avoid that selective memory all together and know exactly where you stand.

Will Canada Legalize Online Gambling Before the U.S.?

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

The new American gambling resolutions have been pushed back once again, and the deadline for implementing the UIGEA is drawing ever closer. Many American online gambling advocates thought that 2010 would be the year that the U.S. finally rescinded the UIGEA and legalize regulated online gambling. Lately American gambling industry insiders, operators and fans are sounding a lot less optimistic, and now it looks like their neighbors to the north may get the job done before the U.S. government does.

The Canadian Gaming Summit is in Calgary, Canada this week and the online gambling industry’s leading officials have all gathered to talk about making Canadian online casinos a reality. While online gambling itself is not illegal in Canada – either explicitly or implicitly as it is in the U.S. – operating online gambling establishments inside the country is. Since online gambling is a $1 billion industry in Canada, even without Canadian sites, it’s easy to see how opening the door to native operators could be profitable for the country and some of its tech companies.

The Canadian government currently has a laissez faire policy toward offshore operators that does little to protect Canadian players. The Interactive Gaming Council, whose president is the lead speaker at the Summit this week, would like to see the government get more proactive about online gambling by attaching new regulations to any Canadian operating licenses. While profit potential is of course a driving factor, many Canadians believe that legalizing native operators would also offer security benefits to the large number of citizens that already play online.

Proponents of online casino licensing in Canada believe that the existing population of gambling citizens will be more likely to play at sites that they know are licensed and regulated by the Canadian government, and that the government can do more to fight the growing gambling addiction problem if it approaches it from the source.

Under the country’s current online gambling policy – or lack thereof – Canadian citizens are free to play what they like, where they like and when they like. The government has absolutely no involvement in the industry, regardless of how its citizens are affected. That means that Canadian players that choose a less than reputable casino and suffer from identity theft can expect no legal recourse via the Canadian government. It’s gamble at your own risk, but many citizens feel that it’s time for their country not only to claim its share of the revenue but to protect the growing contingent of online Canadian gamblers.

How Progressive Slot Machines Work

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Progressive slot machines may be the most misunderstood gaming device in the casino. All too often, players will sit down at a progressive slot machine and start playing without realizing the differences between a progressive slot and a typical slot machine. While a progressive slot machine promises higher jackpots then any slot in the house, they can be dangerous if a player does not understand how they work.

How a Progressive Slot Machine Works

Typically, progressive slot machines work similar to communal slots. There is often a row (or several rows) of the same type of progressive slot. These machines are tied together in to one big pot. Every time a player places a bet, a portion of that money is added to the pot. The jackpot is paid out on a scale depending on how much the player is betting.

The Three Types of Progressive Slot Machines

Stand Alone Progressive: A Stand Alone Progressive slot machine operates independent of other progressive slots. In a Stand Alone Progressive machine, the player’s bet increases the jackpot on that machine alone.

In-House Progressive: An In-House Progressive is a series of slot machines owned by the casino. These machines can either be tied to other similar machines in the casino or tied to a larger network of machines in several casinos owned by the same company. An In-House Progressive slot machine’s jackpot is shared by every machine.

Wide Area Progressive: A Wide Area Progressive slot machine is linked to many slot machines all owned and operated slot machine company. In a Wide Area Progressive slot, every slot machine on the grid adds to the jackpot pool. These types of slot machines generally have the highest payout, and the lowest odds of striking the jackpot.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of a Progressive Slot Machine

Progressive slot machines offer the highest jackpots of any slot machines in the casino. These jackpots are often as enticing as a big poker tournament win. However, to qualify for the full jackpot, a player must be betting the maximum amount on every spin. If they are betting less then the maximum and hit the jackpot, then the payout will be much lower then anticipated. For this reason, it is only a good idea to play progressive slot machines if you can bet the maximum on each spin, otherwise a player should stick to a multiplier slot machine.

CryptoLogic – A Quick Look at the Casino Game Giant

Monday, April 26th, 2010

CryptoLogic has now been a major competitor in the casino software market for more than 15 years. That means that some of the very first online casinos were powered by a CryptoLogic platform. While many of the original software companies have since fallen behind the times and technology, CryptoLogic continues to lead in its field with innovative new features and some of the best and most impressive licensing agreements in the industry.

The History of CryptoLogic

CryptoLogic was originally created by two brothers working from their parents’ basement. The Rivkin brothers only designed their first casino software as a compliment to an online payment system they had also designed. In 1996, InterCasino officially became the first online casino operating on a CryptoLogic platform. Many game historians claim that InterCasino was the first real-money online casino, thanks largely to its CryptoLogic software and payment applications. While the payment system is now long gone, the software has become a staple in the online gaming industry.

You can experience CryptoLogic software firsthand at some of your favorite online casinos, sportsbooks, poker rooms and – most recently – bingo sites. The software has long lent itself to the wild success of Europe’s most popular sportsbook, William Hill. InterCasino also remains a big draw for online players thanks to the fresh look and fast gameplay its longtime partnership with CryptoLogic has created. And the internationally renowned World Poker Tour brand now conducts its online operations on a CryptoLogic platform.

Award Winning Games

Though CryptoLogic software scores high across the board for speed, quality of graphics and in-play features and options, the company’s biggest claim to fame is its award-winning game titles. Whereas many other software brands offer a long list of generic game titles, CryptoLogic has secured a number of licensing agreements that allow the company to create games centered around more recognizable characters and brands.

The Future of CryptoLogic

In the last couple years CryptoLogic has expanded its fanbase and driven significant traffic to its licensees via its extremely popular line of superhero slots. In previous years these slots featured the most recognizable Marvel Comics characters – from Spider-Man to the X-Men to the Fantastic Four. In the fall of 2009, the company announced a new agreement that will give it access to the significant staple of characters represented by DC Entertainment (Marvel’s biggest competitor). Industry insiders believe this move will allow CryptoLogic to continue its famous game branding should Disney – who purchased the comic giant late last year – pull the plug on their Marvel slots licensing agreement when it expires in 2013.

How to Play Double Barrel Bonus Video Poker

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Double Barrel Bonus is a form of video poker. Video poker machines are becoming common place in both land based an online casino. Video poker is similar to traditional poker, except the player uses a gaming machine instead of a poker table. The video poker machine acts as the dealer and the player only plays against himself.

Double Barrel Bonus Video Poker is a traditional five-card poker card game with a twist. In Double Barrel Bonus, the player is dealt five cards. Those five cards must have a pair of jacks or better for the player to win the hand.

How do I Play Double Barrel Bonus Video Poker?

To start a round of Double Barrel Bonus, the player will place an Ante bet by entering a monetary amount on the betting screen. An Ante bet is required for each round of Double Barrel Bonus, and several casinos place a minimum betting limit on the bet.

Once the Ante bet has been placed, the player will be dealt five cards by the poker machine. From here the player can decide whether to ride their hand or fold. If he or she folds, they will loose their Ante bet. If the player wants to ride their hand, they must raise their original Ante bet.

After raising their Ante bet, the player can discard the playing cards they do not feel are helping their hand. A player can discard up to four cards. The video poker machine will then deal out additional cards to replace the ones discarded by the player.

The player will only get one chance to change their hand. After the second round of dealing, the player will enter the final draw against the video poker machine. The player must have at least a pair of jacks to win the hand. Any less and the player will loose their bet.

How Does Betting Work in Double Barrel Bonus?

If the player is holding a pair of jacks or better they will be paid out according to the betting structure for the video poker machine. Typically, Double Barrel Bonus pays out on a ratio of 1:1 or 3:1. However, the pay out structure is determined by the casino and may vary. Players can view the pay out structure in the options menu of the video poker machine.

It is important to remember that Double Barrel Bonus is an all-or-nothing game of poker. If the player’s hand is equal to or more then a pair of jacks, then the player will be paid. If the hand is any less, the player will loose their bet. For this reason, it is important to play each hand carefully and know when to fold. It is better to fold a poor hand on an Ante bet then to loose both an Ante and a raise. Players can minimize this risk by keeping their bet raises small on the hands they are not certain of and saving the larger raises for guaranteed hands.
