When you play a game of poker in a casino there are three different ways the betting is handled. These betting regulations are set by the casino and are clearly marked near each poker table. The different ways of betting, limit, no limit, and pot limit, determines how much a poker player can bet during any game of poker. The different betting regulations have there advantages and disadvantages.
The Limit Betting Structure
At a limit betting table there is a set limit for each bet and bet raise at the poker table. At a limit betting table, a player must make the set limit bet for each hand the play and raise, they cannot bet higher or lower then the limit. For example, if a player was playing a one to two dollar game of Texas Hold ‘Em they might bet one dollar on the Pre Flop hand (known as small bet,) then one dollar on the Flop hand, then two dollars on the Turn hand (known as a large bet,) and another large two dollar bet on the River hand. A limit betting structure is best for beginning poker players and players who are more comfortable with lower risk games.
The No Limit Betting Structure
The no limit betting structure is the most intense betting option of the three. In a no limit betting structure, players must meet a minimum bet requirement, but can bet or raise as high as they wish at any point in the game. The minimum bet in a no limit poker game is equal to the amount of the big blind. For example, if a player were playing a one to two dollar no limit poker game, the player would have to bet a minimum of two dollars to equal the big blind. From there the player could raise their bet as high as they wish. A no limit betting structure is best for advanced players who are comfortable with high stakes poker games.

A pot limit betting structure is the least popular of the three betting structures and few American land based casinos will feature it. Pot limit is however popular at online casinos. In a pot limit betting structure the minimum bet has to equal the big blind and the maximum bet can equal up to the amount in the pot. For example, if a player was playing a game of poker with a two-dollar blind and 200 dollars in the pot, they must make a minimum bet of two dollars to be in on each hand. From there the player could raise their bet up to 200 dollars.
